My class schedule is set. Now it’s time to make sure I have the back-to-school essentials: a collegiate wardrobe fit for class, lab work, and teaching an undergraduate psychology lab. I see lots of sweater vests, blazers, and button-up blouses over skinny jeans and chunky shoes. I’m excited about fall – it’s always been my favorite fashion season!

Fashion mags always start in mid-summer with their fall previews. The thought of fur (faux, of course) or leather in this 95-plus heat makes me crazy, but also makes me excited for the cool evenings to come.

I started my fall perusing at the Gap Inc. stores. Below are some of the looks/pieces I will be snatching up: Continue reading ‘fall 2010 (gap inc. edition)’

Sales aplenty in July! It is a typically slow retail month, so the main street stores pull out all the stops and give you some bargain prices on summer gear.

J.Crew

Mostly ruffles and chic summer slouch from this retailer. It’s hard for me to find items I am willing to spend the money the piece requires at J.Crew. But these were all an extra 30 percent off, so that was my justification.

Loving Dakota Fanning on the cover of Marie Claire’s August issue. She looks amazing and makes me wish it wasn’t so damn hot outside so I could rock the shorts + tights + lame look. I desperately wanted to dive into MC instead of my Psychology of Women textbook. Reading fashion magazines = class research!? =)

summer 2010

09Jun10

Having spent a month in Europe, absorbing as much fashion inspiration as I could, I come back to the States with a bit of an identity crisis.  One thing is for sure, European Gaps are fantastic compared to U.S. Gaps. I did get chastised, however, by some crunchy Germans for supporting the evil Gap Inc. empire. Oh well, I can’t help it. It’s the wicked capitalist in me that just had to have these Design Edition shoes from Gap:

25% off, $20 style rewards, free shipping … what more could a silly American girl as for!?

oxfords

28Feb10

Oxfords are my spring fashion obsession! This cute slingback pair is from Urban and epitomizes what I love about this spring’s fashion choices. Neutral tones and masculine notes (as the boyfriend jean sticks around and the drapey white button-shirt gets paired with everything from cropped pants to denim cutoffs).

There are so many trends this spring that I can get behind. I love the emphasis on the little white dress, the harkening back to pastoral days with desert shoes and calico prints, the neutral tones emphasized with blush colors, etc.

There are a couple of things, however, to which I am not looking forward. For instance, the sporty look accentuated by the biker short (or variations thereof).

They’ve already started creeping up at Urban Outfitters and other retailers. I hope this doesn’t catch on.

I am also not a big fan of the mod era, the 1960s. Elle did a piece on how to wear this season’s plastic clothing. Really? No one about the age of 6 should wear anything plastic! And even then, it should be relegated to those dress-up “ruby red” slippers and Disney princess tiaras.

faux fur find

07Feb10

I have been on a winter clothing buying spree this year. Faced with a trip to Vancouver to visit my husband while he helps NBC cover the Olympics, I realized living in the Southern U.S. had not presented me with many reasons for warm clothing. Well, I was in luck because this year has been bitterly cold and we have received more inclement weather than usual. So my search for fashionable yet warm clothes has been epic. For a while now I wanted a faux fur vest. I don’t necessarily like real fur and my husband doesn’t even like to carry/wear a whole lot of real leather.

When the fur vest trend hit, I found it – as always – difficult to invest a lot of money in something so trendy. I waited until the right moment and a few hours after I found out I would be interviewing for a grad school program, I treated myself for making the next round to this vest (on sale for $15) from American Eagle:

Now … how to wear it!!??

Interesting combination!

stylefeeder

http://www.xconomy.com/wordpress/wp-content/images/2008/01/stylefeeder_logo.jpgStylefeeder is a great tool that helps you keep track of items you like as you shop online. I know I spend hours browsing online shops only to leave and never revisit because it leaves my mind. You can install Stylefeeder on your toolbar, and add an item to your list as you go. You can even link it to Facebook.

It’s like a conglomerated wishlist. I noticed as I was saving items to my Stylefeeder that I am really into color right now. Working in a store whose designs are pretty much all black with some black + white graphic prints, this doesn’t surprise me. Look me up if you join. My username is rosyeponine.

Rarely is there an occasion in my life that does not call for me to dress my retail brand. Ironically, tomorrow night there is a get-together of my former coworkers at my old store (which closed in January) and I have the perfect, casual night in with the girls outfit.

http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2009/lotd/043009_mendes2_200x400.jpgThis really adorable top from Urban (which looks better in person than on this top-heavy model) paired with these harem pants from Target.

The only piece of the puzzle I don’t have is the shoes. I like the shoes Target pairs with the pants, and I think gladiator is the direction to go.  Either way, this outfit is slouchy, comfy, and fresh.

My husband was puzzled as to if these were really in that I would order some from Urban, return them because they looked ridiculous and then buy a much better suited pair from Tarjay. Well, Eva Mendes, what do you think?
